Still in Turtle Bay

Still in Turtle Bay there is a weather system coming through with 35knt winds expected. we are all set with an extra anchor line on our anchor and an a 2nd anchor added to the end of the chain for extra weight.
We went to shore - had to do a surf landing, which is quite the trick. we managed to keep us and boat dry until we went to leave and we were a little slow and got hit with the surf. Filled our boat with sea water and poor Emma (who was in the bow) and Maya got totally soaked. I also got soaked but I was still in the water trying to help push the dingy in deeper when the surf got me. Thank god it's not cold out!! Our experienced friends (Tillicum) also got wet in their dingy. We will get it figured
out!!
The Bahia de Tortugas village is quite small and poor. Talk about a culture shock. Main road is a dirt road and the main stores, well you can't really tell the difference between the homes and stores. Learned to bring our own TP and wet ones!!
Thank god for our friends who speak a little Spanish - I am picking a few words up here and there and can figure out how to read some. I think this stop has been an eye opener for Steve and the kids. ( remember I've been to China so I wasn't caught to off guard).
Do plan on posting photos when I get to internet. Thank god for the ham and pactor modem we bought . to think I was initially against the Pactor modem!! How stupid of me.

From a website I found, just cutting and pasting the highlights. Have you found the hotdogs yet? :

Freddy and Maria Gerardo have been serving the boating community for may years, and do a commendable job. Throw in a couple of markets, one or two decent small hotels, and even a few good restaurants...well it's no wonder most coastal runners have a soft place in their hearts for Turtle Bay.....The two ladders (one wood and one steel) used to access the pier by boaters are both death traps, but can be used if approached with care......Even some sailboats who don't need fuel stop here for provisions, a good hot meal, the pharmacy, or the use of the towns several phone and fax machines. It's a fun town to stretch those sea legs and do a short walk-about. The fact that the town has no Port Captain that boater have to check in with for port clearance is the icing on the cake!....This may sound stupid, but in Carlos Fiesta's humble opinion the best thing going in Turtle Bay is the unbelievable hot dogs for sale on the cart half way up the hill on the right side of the main road, right next to the market. They just don't get any better than that.....For visitors who have time to sneak away from the bay, the short boat ride to Isla Natividad (just past Punta Eugina) is a real adventure. If the waves are breaking the surfers will find out and watching them surf these giant swells is nothing short of spectacular!

Wow! Sounds like quite the adventure you are having there! I had my own little adventure since my last post about everyone being sick....I then was sick also!! Holy, I thought I was gonna die!!!That is some awful stomach flu we all have been passing about! Danielle and Andrew (from experience) came by to take care of me...put me on a diet of Gravol and Gatorade. Went to the clinic yesterday for the all clear to return to work. So am up early and ready to go! Now in hind sight I am wondering if maybe we all are living a little too vicariously through you guys and we are just seasick too!! *wink* Seems to be affecting only your immediate family Dionne!! lol So...cause you aren't here and having the time of your lives I have decided to blame you guys!! *wink* Just kidding...well it certainly was an odd Christmas first without you guys and then everything being cancelled due to sickness...crazy huh? Enjoy your stay in Turtle Bay...love and miss you all so very much!

Hello Everyone,
So glad you made it safely. Sounded exciting though... We had a very nice Christmas at Gabrielle's and Joe's. They had 11 people at their tiny place but it was fun and the food and company were great. I know Bill was watching over us as the meal was superb. Went to Gary and Sharon's for Boxing day dinner. Lovely to see them. Gary looks a little better. Knock on wood, we are not sick...Everyone is fine and so looking forward to our trip. Must go, love and hugs to you all. You were missed, Auntil Ila

It's great to read of your adventures in Bahia de Tortugas. What a great first "out of country" stop for your big adventure.

We're in the Charlottes (Haida Gwaii) visiting with Faye, Kerry and Jordie, and have been sharing your blog with them. They all send best wishes!

Yesterday we went to North Beach (where Dixon Entrance meets Hecate Strait) after we heard that swimming scallops were coming in. People walk or drive along the water on a falling tide looking for the 'lunch to dinner plate' size shells - we found 33 in all, enough for two big meals for the five of us. The biggest shell was about 9" across. The weather was a little different than yours, snow and sleet and cold rain with about 15 knots of wind.

Best wishes from the cold far north, and keep these wonderful blog updates coming! Cheryl and I miss your energy around the marina, and send big hugs to all.

Not speaking the lanuage in any country is a trick. The rule is if the resteraunt is empty, "DON'T EAT THERE!". The pee pee dance is international and a smile by any other words is still a smile.
